I have an exteral hemorrhoid that is hurting badly…just noticed it today. I hear they go down after a certain time…or is this something i need to see the doctor about?

They do not necessarily go down after awhile, though many do, or they may just go down a little. They may treated with creams, suppositories, or be surgically removed, an outpatient procedure. SEE or CALL the DOCTOR, do not act on anyone’s advice but your doctor’s. Even if it just to assure you the creams are fine.
This is only someone else’s advice:
Treatment for hemorrhoids can be as simple as a soak in a warm tub of water. Other remedies that are simple to use include the multitude of ointments and creams on the market, as well as medicated pads and suppositories. Changing one’s diet to include more fiber and water to soften stools and prevent constipation is also an effective treatment for hemorrhoids. Avoiding straining during defecation and always answering the call of nature in a timely manner are also good preventative measures. If each of these fails to be an effective treatment for hemorrhoids, there are a number of surgical procedures that have been developed as treatment for hemorrhoids: laser coagulation, rubber band ligation, infrared photocoagulation, hemorrhoid stapling, injection sclerotherapy, and the hemorrhoidectomy.
Finding the best hemorrhoid treatment is a very subjective search. The effectiveness of any hemorrhoid treatment varies according to the type and severity of the hemorrhoid, as well as to the type of individual who is suffering from the hemorrhoid.

Being external, you shouldn’t need to see a doctor unless it starts to bleed. There are so many OTC meds out there you can treat yourself with. Get yourself some cream (Preparation H) to help shrink it and maybe some Tucks pads to wipe with after toileting (Charmin could cause agony!) Remember this is nothing more than a varicose vein in a delicate area, so try to stay off your feet as much as possible for awhile, too, to help relieve pressure!
