Hi, I am an RN. Since you've had problems with the rubber band ligation, I would talk to a doctor about another form of treatment/removal, since this one obviously isnt working for you.

There are many other solutions, such as:

1. Hemorrhoidolysis/Galvanic Electrotherapy: desiccation of the hemorrhoid by electrical current.
2. Sclerotherapy (injection therapy): scleroseant or hardening agent is injected into hemorrhoids. This causes the vein walls to collapse and the hemorrhoids to shrivel up.
3. Laser, infrared or BICAP coagulation: laser, infrared beam, or electricity is used to cauterize the affected tissues. Lasers are now much less popular. Infrared coagulation has been studied in comparison with RBL and found to be as effective in hemorrhoids up to grade III. These are the most readily available non-surgical procedures in the US.
4. Hemorrhoidectomy: a true surgical procedure to excise and remove hemorrhoids.
5. Stapled Hemorrhoidectomy: Also called the procedure for prolapse and hemorrhoids, it is designed to resect soft tissue proximal to the dentate line, which disrupts the blood flow to the hemorrhoids. It is generally less painful than complete removal of hemorrhoids and also allows for faster recovery times.

The comment about talking to an RN in the ER is helpful, but they dont specialize in taking care of anyone with hemorrhoids (people dont come into the ER frequently with hemorrhoids, is what I am saying), so if you'd like another opinion, you could call a hospital and ask for a gastrointestinal nurse.

You can contact your local emergency department by phone and speak to a nurse and see what his/her opinion is.

depending on how long the bands have been on before they came off, it may be wise to go to the emergency room. You may have necrotic flesh in there, and if that gets into your bloodstream, you'll have yourself a nasty case of blood poisoning...(i.e. gangrene).

GO TO THE E.R. or call your doctor IMMEDIATELY.

I don't know anything about the ligation procedure. But I will suggest a trick that appears to work: Distended hemorrhoid veins are caused by blood clots. What common and inexpensive medicine has known anti-clotting properties? Aspirin, of course, so try taking the maximum standard dose of the stuff and see what happens. I would appreciate comments from anyone who tries this and can report results.
