How long can hemorrhoids bleed before it’s considered dangerous?

Mine has been bleeding for 2 weeks, but my doctor’s not surprised and not concerned at all.

For convenience in describing the severity of internal hemorrhoids, many physicians use a grading system:

    1. First-degree hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids that bleed but do not prolapse.
    2. Second-degree hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids that prolapse and retract on their own (with or without bleeding).
    3. Third-degree hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids that prolapse but must be pushed back in by a finger.
    4. Fourth-degree hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids that prolapse and cannot be pushed back in. Fourth-degree hemorrhoids also include hemorrhoids that are thrombosed (containing blood clots) or that pull much of the lining of the rectum through the anus.

Maybe your doctor know you are in the first degree hemorrhoids. So don’t worry much about it :)

    Hi Hurin,

Hemorrhoids usually are not dangerous or life threatening.

Painful hemorrhoid flare-ups can be a persistent problem, especially if you suffer from repeated episodes of constipation. Flare-ups are usually brief, and most symptoms disappear within a few days.

You often can prevent hemorrhoids by preventing episodes of constipation. Some of the following diet and lifestyle changes may help you to soften your stool, establish a regular schedule for bowel movements and avoid the straining that can lead to hemorrhoids:

    * Add more fiber to your diet
    * Drink adequate amounts of fluid
    * Begin a program of regular exercise
    * Train your digestive tract to have regular bowel movements
    * Respond immediately to the urge to have a bowel movement

If dietary changes are not enough to prevent hard, dry stools, your doctor may suggest that you take a fiber powder supplement containing psyllium (Metamucil) or methylcellulose (Citrucel).

    Be patience and good luck!
