Have you tried applying copious amounts of Preparation H™ to your computer? Sorry, it's early in the morning. Are you downloading from the Java site when you get the fatal error?

If yes, it might be time to contact Java and find out from the experts. One of the possible problems might be with IE7. Not every application, program, or website is compatible with IE7 due to programming conflicts. That's why I suggest contacting Java. They might have a work around. You might also take a look at this site, written by a Microsoft MVP who has been involved with IE since 1999. I found the "known issues" section to be an eye-opener. Good luck.
