Is it normal to get hemorrhoids when…?

This does get a bit graphic so, if you are sensitive to that then you’ll not wish to read this.

Is it normal to get hemorrhoids when you’ve recently had a colonoscopy? I had my scope last Friday, and yesterday I noticed a bit of a problem, and today it has become worse. There is definitely a hemorrhoid; it is not bleeding…yet. So I guess I have two questions in one: Is the hemorrhoid a result of the scope? and, What can I do to get rid of it because it hurts to clean myself.

They suck. I don’t believe it is normal to get them after a colonoscopy but you may want to check with your doctor. I got one when I was pregnant. Try Preparation H or Tucks. It is the only thing I know of that will help.

    Hi Michaelfan58,

Since you mentioned "a bit graphic", let me add that having anal sex can cause hemorrhoids. In other words: any foreign object in your anus can cause it as well as hard stools can.

If your colonoscopy has been taped, your colonoscopy doctor could tell you whether he can notice a hemorrhoid or not.

If you never had hemorrhoids before, do go back to your doctor as this is "too much of a coincidence", although doctors do take their precautions not to harm a person during colonoscopy.

Since you say it hurts when you clean yourself, it sounds like a hemorrhoid. It could also be a tiny cut: all very easy to detect if you go back to your doctor.

Meanwhile to keep clean without pain: avoid paper!
    - use a bidet or rinse yourself in the shower. Then take a soft absorbent towel and gently pat yourself dry.
-if you do feel that only using toilet paper is hygienic: blot your anus gently with soft, white toilet paper moistened with water or with a cleansing agent or go to the bigger supermarket or pharmacy to buy baby wipes or other premoist towels.
