The cure may be worse than the illness. But, I've noticed that gay men never seem to complain of having hemorrhoids. Hummmm, I'll just have to suffer in private. Your diet is the most helpful long term remedy, but a nightly glass of Metamucil was the final cure for me. Good luck on getting unstuck. 8^{I)

Hemorrhoids never go away. They are permanent and the only way to get rid of them is with surgery.

I would try everything before having surgery. Try sitting in your bath tub with the water as hot as you can stand it. This will help to shrink them and make them more tolerable if they are outside of your rectum. If they are inside, you may have to have surgery.

I feel for you because I have had them before. I sat in water as hot as i could stand it for about 15 minutes and then used the cream and then lie down as much as possible. after a couple of days they went away.

Treatment of hemorrhoids involves alleviating the symptoms. To reduce pain and itching of hemorrhoids, you can try these methods:

    * Take sitz baths; sit in a shallow bath of warm water several times a day. Don't add anything to the water.
    * Use a hemorrhoid cream (like Preparation H) or suppository. Follow the directions on the package. These products help with the symptoms, but they don't shrink the hemorrhoids.
    * Don't strain during bowel movements. Talk to your doctor about using a stool softener to help with constipation.
    * Avoid becoming dehydrated.

To relieve constipation:

    * Increase the amount of fiber in your diet by eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Five to ten servings of fruits and vegetables are recommended each day. Fiber supplements may be helpful -- examples include Metamucil and Citrucel.
    * Talk to your doctor about using over-the-counter laxatives or stool softeners.
    * Exercise regularly. Even walking regularly helps improve the normal flow of material through the intestine.
    * Empty the bowels when you feel the urge to do so. Immediately following a meal the body will have a natural urge to defecate. That's a good time to plan a visit to the bathroom.

If these methods do not relieve the symptoms, you may need to have surgery to get rid of the hemorrhoids

All the treatments that are out there are only for shrinking the tissue, which sometimes makes them 'go away' or at least seem to because they are smaller. But the only way to remove the tissue is via surgery or banding which is only used in extreme cases. If you do a google search, you can find some surgical photos that show what most doctors consider "worthy" of surgery. Banding technique is a surgical alternative - they basically place a rubber band around the base of the tisse as tight as tight can be, and choke the blood flow until it falls off. This procedure can take days/weeks and is only used on certain types of hemorrhoids.
