As far as "meal", when dealing w/ hemorrhoids it is advisable to increase fiber and water intake. Fiber helps the transit of the colon and when you do increase fiber, water must be increased as well. When you eat food, it is manipulated and mixed with enzymes in the stomache in preparation for the journey into the small intestines (we call a food bolus mixed with stomach enzymes "chyme") When this goes into the small intestine, the bulk of the nutrients are sent out into the blood stream (laymans explanation) and the waste products are sent through to the colon. The colon is the place where most of the water is absorbed from the waste product and if your body is in need of water, it will suck that waste dry, resulting in a harder stool that may require more straining to evacuate. Fiber will help move the stool through the colon and if you have an increased water intake, the colon doesn’t need to suck as much from the waste product, resulting in a softer stool mass which requires less strain to excrete. If your friend is experiencing discomfort with hemorrhoid, suggest OTC preparation H and witch hazel pads and follow package directions. Hope this helps!

Meals don’t matter. Avoid spicy foods during the flare up. Tell him to get some cortizone suppositories (might need a prescription) and some tucks pads.

A person who has problems with hemorrhoids needs to eat a high fiber diet so they will be regular. They may need a mild stool softener until they get regulated. Treat them by hemorrhoid cremes or whatever doc suggests. Sit two or three times a day in very warm water. Try not to strain when voiding or it will make them worse. If it gets to be a regular problem, there is hemorrhoid surgery. Needless to say, that is a very, very painful ailment to have–it is basically varicose veins.
