What can soothe hemorrhoids during pregnancy?

Sorry if TMI and this is really embarrassing, but then I just couldn’t take it anymore. It’s so painful I could cry!!! It’s been sore (excruciatingly sore) for about four days now and I don’t know what to do about it. Sitz bath didn’t work for me. I won’t be seeing my doctor until Monday. I also sit during during work.. Has anyone been through this as well?

I’m 31 weeks pregnant by the way.
Didn’t I just mention that the sitz bath didn’t work for me?

  1. Yes, I hear you. I was crying myself about 4 days ago they were so excruciating. You should try and get in today not wait. This is my fourth pregnancy and have had it with each of them. I suspect you have blood clots. Have your spouse look or use a mirror. If there are dark purple spots they need to be lanced and drained. They will give you numbing cream, freezing in the hemorroid with a needle and they will slice and drain them. This is very, very painful. But if thats what you have, there is no other way to make them go away. You will also need prescription cream. Over the counter creams will not work. Make sure you are very clean after a bowel movement (epsim salts bath.) Use tucks to clean/cotton balls with witch hazel, and ice will help them shrink. You can even gently squeeze them so the blood goes back into the vein and they will shrink. Eat a high fiber diet and if you need to take metamucil or something like that. Talk to your pharmacist. My sympathies too you. I have a month left.

  2. Tuck pads!

Use them after every BM and as needed.

  3. You are supposed to soak cotton balls in witch hazel - apply to the area for a few minutes and get instant relief!

If you sit during work - you need to buy one of the memory foam pillows in the shape of a "U." Sit on that and it will relieve the pressure where the hemorrhoids are.

  4. • Apply an ice pack (with a soft covering) to the affected area several times a day. Ice may help decrease swelling and discomfort. Some women find cold compresses saturated with witch hazel to be soothing.

    • Soak your bottom in warm water, in a tub or a sitz bath. A sitz bath is small plastic basin that you fill with water and position over your toilet, allowing you to submerge your rectal area simply by sitting down.

    • Try alternating cold and warm treatments. Start with an ice pack followed by a warm sitz bath.

    • Gently but thoroughly clean the affected area after each bowel movement using soft, unscented, white toilet tissue, which causes less irritation than colored, scented varieties. Moistening the tissue can help, too. Many women find using pre-moistened wipes more comfortable than using toilet tissue. You can buy medicated wipes (such as Tucks) made specifically for people with hemorrhoids.

    • Ask your healthcare practitioner to recommend a safe topical anesthetic or medicated suppository. There are many hemorrhoid-relief products on the market, but consult your practitioner before trying one on your own. Most of these products should be used for a short course of treatment only (a week or less). Continued use can cause even more inflammation.

  5. Yes, they get to me quite often since I have given birth to my son and now that I am pregnant again they are getting worse. The thing I have found that works is a stock of witch hazel pads and frequent warm baths.

  7. Self-care measures at home can often relieve the pain and discomfort of hemorrhoids. Try a sitz bath, a small plastic tub that fits over the toilet seat. You can usually find a sitz bath at drug stores. In the bathtub or sitz bath, sit in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes, several times a day if needed.

Frequent bathing to keep your anus clean may help. But be careful not to scrub the skin while washing, which can hurt. Soap isn’t necessary and may just make the problem worse. Gently pat the area dry. After bowel movements, wipe gently but thoroughly. Avoid toilet paper with potentially irritating perfumes or colors. Try alcohol-free wipes or lightly moistened toilet paper.

You can dab external hemorrhoids with witch hazel pads or soothe them with a cold compress or an ice pack. To ease painful bowel movements, place some petroleum jelly inside and around the edge of the anus. If itching is an issue, resist the urge to scratch. This could make your condition worse. Instead, try wet or dry baking soda or over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to get some relief.

Although it may seem like a good idea, don’t use an inflatable doughnut cushion to pad your chair if you sit for long periods of time. It may feel good but it can actually increase the pressure in the veins around your anus. Instead, get up and move around a bit to bring some relief.
