its probably best to see your internist first, then you can get referred to a general or colorectal surgeon depending on how bad the hemorrhoids are.

Your general practitioner (regular doctor) can probably handle them. If you have them all the time or they’re really severe you can see a proctologist.

I’d start with a general practitioner – you likely can get an appointment faster. It would probably take longer to get an appointment with a proctologist (specialist). If the problem is not too serious, the GP should be able to help.

You see your primary care doctor first.

It really depends how severe the Hemorrhoids are. If they are external and relatively minor, you family doctor can pretty much treat them.
However—if they bleed, are external and internal, severe pain…then a Proctologist is the type of doctor you would see to treat this condition.

It is always best to take life in stages. First, you should see your family doctor (GP) and if they think that you need specialist treatment, then it is best that they do the referral.
I took this approach when I first had problems with a fissure (internal tear) along with some internal hemorrhoids (swollen veins).
Initially, I had to use suppositories and creams but I ended up having to had surgery.
It might surprise you to know that a lot of help will come from using a good diet with lots of fluids and fiber (not any old fiber as this could ‘back-fire’). This is not only needed for the healing but also to prevent the recurrence.
My wife and I have used primarily natural methods for treating fissures and hemorrhoids with great success. You can read our true story by following the link at http://www.nohemorrhoids.net/say_goodbye_to_hemorrhoids.html
